If you’re making a list of the most dynamic musical performers in Northeast Ohio, White Buffalo Woman, The Vindys, and Demos Papadimas & His Band would all have to place near the top. Despite their disparate styles, the three groups proved they fit perfectly on the same bill, packing the house at Canton’s Buzzbin Art & Music Shop on a rain-soaked spring night.
Batting leadoff, Youngstown’s Demos Papadimas demonstrated his unique Greco-Americana style, a blend of Greek rebetiko and American roots kicked up with a little rock vibe thanks to the fairly recent addition of an electric guitar. With the crowd swelling to fire-marshal-frightening levels, fellow Steel Valley natives The Vindys took the stage and refused to give it up, playing a wide ranging set of soulful originals and classic rock covers that highlighted the band members copious musical talents and frontwoman Jackie Popovec’s onstage charisma. To add a slight bit of regional diversity, local boys White Buffalo Woman capped off the night with their old-school rock ‘n’ roll sound, with lead vocalist Evan Rutledge ranging across the stage in a typically frenetic display. Any lineup including one of these groups is well worth a peek, but the combined forces of all three made this a must-see local music event.
