James McMurtry & John Moreland: The Kent Stage, 3/22/18

Two of Americana’s finest songwriters, James McMurtry & John Moreland, joined forces for a co-headline bill at The Kent Stage in Kent, Ohio. McMurtry—the surly Austinite perhaps best known for an epic alt country dance tune touching on the Southwest American methamphetamine trade and set at a family reunion—mostly shied away from his sharp-tongued political missives and instead focused on his repertoire of finely drawn character sketches. Moreland—the pride of Oklahoma’s prosperous Americana scene—brought a full band to back up his red dirt stories, but the highlight of his set was undeniably the collection of songs played duo-style with fellow Tulsan John Calvin Abney, which allowed the former’s masterful lyrics to shine through more brightly.
